We should permanently provide forward funding for education and the state should provide education in Anchorage as it does in rural Alaska, resulting in lower property taxes. We can produce higher quality adults by lengthening the school day, instead of sending children home, mid-afternoon, to empty homes. We should provide sports, music, arts, drama, vocational study, tutoring, supervised study time and other education opportunities to broaden and deepen education after mid-day. -dh, 8-7-08 Arts & Education Support for the arts fits squarely into a Republican agenda based on fiscal conservatism and limited government. The arts are an important driver of economic growth, creating jobs both directly and indirectly in our economy. The arts are an essential part of solid public education, helping students to learn other subjects like language and mathematics more easily and thoroughly, and enabling young minds to work proactively and with greater imagination. The arts also contribute in essential ways to the quality of life that attracts residents to Alaska, as well as serving as a magnet to the ever-growing numbers of visitors to the Last Frontier. For these reasons and more, it makes perfect sense for Republican candidates and elected officials to support public funding for the arts, and to advance the public dialogue about forward-funding arts and education programs. -dh, 9-30-08 (With thanks to Benjamin Brown, for his input.)
